Concept Idea for Contemporary Art Gallery

My concept idea for this contemporary art gallery is to express the natural and artificial light to the art gallery. Going through bright and dark part of this gallery but even though it's dark it will bring light by artificial light from artist works. The works on this gallery will be based on the instillation and sculptures and few art drawings/paintings/photographs/prints etc... Relating back to my narrative, it's a place where everyone can get inspired and bring up their unknown knowledge by examining the works produced by contemporary artists. By this it gives public to experience different culture of art works and very unique designs produced with materials that we can use in daily life.

The building will be white to give very modern mood to the environment, which will give strong characteristic building to the community but inside it will contain colourful and lighting works which will brighten up the darkness of this art gallery. The material of the building would be concrete, which will help to respond to intense light or sound.

The rooms for displaying artist works in the gallery will be spaced out through two big rooms but it will have sub divisions for instillation and lighting sculptures. It will need to have sound barrier/proofing wall to prevent the music for instillation to emerge with other music.

The courtyard will be displayed at the back of the gallery for a rest place and to recall back to what people might have seen in the gallery.

Studio/house room for the owner and the artists will be placed in the upper level of the building, by building it up in two levels will match the height of the surrounding buildings on this site.

Project 3 - Further Research about Artists

Laura Adel Johnson

Jen Stark

For this contemporary art gallery, I have chosen two artists who deal with strong contemporary art works. Jen Stark and Laurar Adel Johnson both are well known for sculpture works. But Jen Stark also produces some installations, drawings which expresses her thoughts and feelings very freely. These two artists produces very bright works but in idfferent way. Jen Stark expresses brightness by use of colours in her sculptures, and her materials are very common material that we deal with in our daily life. All her works are like illusion and maze like works. On the other hand Laura Adel Johnson produces bright work by use of light bulbs but not too big light bulbs but the light that we use in occasion like Christmas. She also uses different colour to express the characteristic of the human figures. Very common point about these two artist is that they get inspired with immediate environment materials and produces their own unique art works.

I personally think that these two artists will give strong inspiration to the community in Newtown and they also give individual artistic mood to the art gallery. The use of colour relates back to the relation of different culture, individual clothing style, music, individual characteristic and more. Also the use of light illustrates the relation of dark and bright time of Newtown. What I mean by this is even in the day time and night time there are different type of activities to do in Newtown and it will be still bright even though it's in night time.

Project 3 - Architect Research

Herning Museum of Contemporary Art | Steven Holl architects

Herning Museum of Contemporary Art in Herning, Denmark is a first prize winning project designed by Steven Holl Architects to accommodate exhibition galleries, 150 seat auditorium, music rehearsal rooms, restaurant, media library and administrative offices.

The Herning Center of the Arts unites three distinct cultural institutions: the Herning Museum of Contemporary Art, the MidWest Ensemble and the Socle du Monde. The new center is intended to be an innovative forum combining visual art and music.

Herning’s prominent relationship with textiles and the Museum’s large collection of original works by Piero Manzoni (in total 46 works) form the inspiration for the concept design. The museum is sited near Herning’s original Angli shirt factory, and the shirt collar-shaped plan of its 1960s building has inspired the shape of the new museum building.

Viewed from above, the roof geometry resembles a collection shirt sleeves laid over the gallery spaces: the curved roofs bring balanced natural lights to the galleries. The loose edges of the plan offer spaces for the café, auditorium, lobby, and offices. The exhibition spaces can be easily closed, while all peripheral spaces remain open for after-hours use. Truck tarps were inserted into the white concrete formwork to yield a fabric texture to the building’s exterior walls.Gallery spaces are orthogonal and finely proportioned for art, while overhead curved roof sections transport natural light into the spaces.

The galleries’ perimeter walls are load bearing elements, emphasizing these as “treasure boxes” in the museum. Internal gallery walls of lightweight construction are movable, providing flexibility in anticipation of changing exhibitions. Floors of integral color charcoal concrete unify the ground plane into a continuous patina with a wax finish.

The reason I have researched Steven Holl is his has focused deeply with his contemporary art gallery creating different use in art gallery, such as using as display art, performance art, and music. He also focused on how people will move through his gallery which is very important point to think about the gallery. The point I like about Steven Holl's gallery is how people flow through the gallery very freely and simple design of exterior.

Mark Lawrence

Mark Lawrence is a christian artist which he presents his most expressive abstract art to brightly shine the light of Jesus Christ in the world. He creates his works by the experience of his vision of honor, praise and glorify the Risen Lord with art inspired by Bible verses.

Mark Lawrence said, "The Christian art I create is not an attempt to depict a likeness, nor an image of anything to be worshipped here on earth, or in heaven above. My art is created to point all people to Jesus Christ who is worthy of all of our honor, glory and praise."

The reason I chose this artist is that he illustrates strong theme of religion and this also shows strong intense light which I want to focus on when I'm designing my art gallery. His works creates uniqueness of individual interest of own topic when creating art work. This will also link to the mood of Newtown.

Project 3 - Narrative

Narrative:

"Retired artist who wants to encourage and support younger contemporary artists to develop their work. The artist has his own studio house separated from the art gallery. This commercial art gallery is for the public to see and be inspired by the artists and their work."

Project 3 - Site Analysis

King Street is the main street of Newtown and centre of commercial and entertainment activity. Enmore Road branches off King Street towards the suburb of Enmore at Newtown Bridge, where the road passes over the railway line at Newtown Station. The main shopping strip of Newtown is the longest and most complete commercial precinct of the late Victorian and Federation period in Australia. King Street is often referred to as "Eat Street" in the media due to the large number of cafes, pubs and restaurants. Newtown is a centre of Thai cuisine, but its diverse culture has attracted an astounding array of cuisines, including Balinese, Chinese, Vietnamese and Japanese, Indian, Italian, Greek, Mexican, Spanish, African, French, Turkish, Sri Lankan, Lebanese and both traditional and modern Australian. Cafes, restaurants and galleries can also be found ini the streets surrounding King Street - in particular Enmore Road, Wilson Street and Australia Street.

Since Newtown is city of first suburban shopping centre outside the City Centre it has large number of people that visits this town. The mood of Newtown is very cultural, as well as unique with all different individual style of shops all around the main road, King Street. Today this thoroughfare us still a shopper's mecca - lined with hundreds or stores, cafes, restaurants and lively pubs. Also the Newtown area has long been a very diverse melting pot, with people of many ethnic backgrounds and this vibrant local colour and 'flavour' extends into neighbouring suburbs around Newtown. Newtown is very open and individual cultural area which relates to all creativeness to this town. Relation with music, performing art different type of sex, such as gay and lesbians, different culture and clothing.

For this Project 3, the theme of Newtown links strongly with the contemporary art, because of its individuality of design and unique creation of art works and its use of colour and materials also gives strong connection to characteristic of Newtown.

Final Model

This is my final model for the Project 2.

This model's concept was brought from Dutch painting by Pieter de Hooch, 'The Musical Conversation.'

When I was developing through to my final design for this model, I focused on my narrative and painting's story, which I was figuring out by analysising the painting.

My narrative is; 'A private place for a soloist to practice in a town square.'

So, from the model I tried to build a model with a private but public mood to the soloist.

The soloist is placed on the top floor of building which has a large opening, and this opening allows her to send out her song out to the public environment. This opening for the roof constructs as a private but public feeling to the building.

The windows on this model suggests the melody, beat, tempo, rhythm and all of this words represents the musical inspiration to this model.

The ramp which leads the soloist from ground level to the top level links back to the painting. In the painting, from the enterance from the door to where the soloist is, brings the light from the darkness to the bright light. So when the soloist walks up to her room, it brings intense light to her as she enters her private space to practice for her music.

This builing is placed on the street infront of Delft Canal, because the canal of waters have representation of music like rhythm and flow of melody, it gives smoothness.
